Listening for Calling Workshop
FAQs
What is calling?
A lot has been written about calling. Instead of me suggesting sources, I encourage you to explore that question by asking friends and colleagues, seeing what speaks to you online or in print, etc. Make your questions and conversations about calling part of your discernment. If you want to know more about my understanding of calling, there are some blog posts at the bottom of this page.
What does “listening” mean?
This workshop is an invitation to cultivate the ears of your heart and spirit. You may already be good at listening with your head, but listening in this way is to foster awareness and knowing that are not so linear and easily describable. It is about discovering muscles for noticing more layers of yourself and the world. It is about being found and receiving, not just deciding and doing. This kind of listening requires a certain amount of letting go, opening, trusting, patience, and practice. It is an opportunity to find new spaces and ways to be the truest you. It is an invitation to deepen relationship with yourself and that something greater that calls to you.
Who should come?
Anyone who is grabbed by the workshop description! Our time can be a good introduction if you are new to the concept of calling or the idea of listening. It can also be worthwhile if you are more familiar with calling and are in one of those times where such gatherings can help you go deeper. Or you may be elsewhere along this continuum. Try listening more to what made you curious, and know you are welcome.
What will we do?
This three-hour workshop will offer catalytic ways to understand calling, engage discernment, and listen in new ways. The goal is to help you think more about who you are, how you have been shaped, and where you may be going. It will also allow you to share some of your story and hear from others. Silence will be weaved in, and we’ll take part in a few listening practices. We’ll also spend some time outside.
Although it could happen, the goal is not to figure out your calling or next step during this time. Rather, it is to share, explore, and learn in ways that can shape your practices of discernment and listening – to give you tools to keep pursuing your call.
Do I need to be a person of faith? Is this Christian?
Anyone is welcome and there are no requirements or expectations with regard to faith, religion, spirituality, etc. Although I am Christian and will use some biblical references, the goal in doing so is to share my personal story and understanding of listening authentically – not to narrow anyone else’s focus. I’ll also use secular references and create space for sharing by participants that lifts up other religious and non-religious ways of approaching listening and calling. This workshop is to help you on your journey.
Is there food?
The Potter’s House is a café with great food and coffee. None will be offered as part of our time, but you could come early to get some and bring into the workshop.
