This sounds crazy. Is it?
Well, it could be different than what one is used to! It does bring together spirituality, nature, listening, and noticing in a very trusting and experiential way. And yes, some people would say silent listening in the woods is crazy. But, there are many who understand this as a deep practice for learning more about self and God. They have cultivated a sense of self in nature that allows them to find comfort, inspiration, guidance, and more.
Crazy? Maybe if it were for 24 hours. This short time is easier to try.
Who should come?
Anyone who is interested in listening to self and God with some guidance and suggestions. Anyone who is open to letting go and receiving in potentially new ways. Anyone who is willing to embrace silence and stillness, and is OK with spending time in the woods.
This Wandering can be an introduction to this practice and discipline, as well as a chance for experienced wanderers to go deeper on their journeys.
What should I bring?
Openness. As much trust in God and self as possible. A desire for greater awareness. Patience. A question or reality that feels important. Clothes for the woods. Water.
What will we do?
We’ll meet near the Capital Crescent Trail at Massachusetts Ave and Little Falls Parkway in Bethesda, Maryland. I’ll offer some education about Wilderness Wandering and help you establish your focus. Then you’ll have a few hours to wander in the woods. Afterwards, we’ll gather at The Carpenter’s House for a short discussion and snacks. We will wander rain or shine!
How can I prepare?
I am happy to speak with you. In addition, there are two informal information sessions where you can ask questions and feel this idea out:
Sunday October 2, 5:30 - 7:00 pm
Sunday October 9, 5:30 - 7:00 pm
Do I need to be a person of faith? Is this Christian?
Anyone is welcome and there are no requirements or expectations with regard to faith, religion, spirituality, etc. My desire is to help you on your journey - not convince you to walk my path or anyone else's.
I hope this Wandering creates space for participants to explore whatever is meaningful and will support growth. A mix of Judeo-Christian, ecumenical, other religious, broadly spiritual, and secular sources may be used to catalyze the day. In addition, I believe the views and needs of participants will shape focus, experience, and conversation.
More on our spirituality is HERE.
Is there food?
Participants are encouraged not to eat during our time, unless necessary for health reasons. When we gather at the end, coffee, tea, and snacks will be available.
